Laona in brief
Located 170 km west of Nicosia and 39 km from Paphos Airport, the region known as "Laona" is a natural extension of the rich ecosystem that forms the Akamas National Park. It consists of a cluster of 7 historic villages of Cyprus, all close to one another: Kathikas, Arodes, Ineia, Kritou Terra, Akourdalia, Miliou, and Droushia. Most of the villages have recently been renovated and beautified (with paved streets, restored facades, squares, etc.). Stroll leisurely through their cobblestone lanes, relax at the traditional cafés, and enjoy the charm of easy living.
The villages, along with the surrounding ecosystem of vineyards, olive trees, carob trees, and oak forests, create an ideal environment that closely resembles regions like Provence in France, Tuscany in Italy, and Rioja in Spain.
The area could easily be described as a gastronomic paradise, boasting 13 restaurants, 6 wineries, and several dairies. Sightseeing and activities include visits to historic churches (dating back to the 12th-14th century), waterfalls, an old casino built in 1880, folklore museums, botanical gardens, art workshops, and more. The region is perfect for hiking nature trails, cycling, and rock climbing—especially in Ineia and Droushia.
The locals are mostly farmers and livestock breeders—hospitable and straightforward. They speak a distinct local dialect, and the youth are passionate about their land and want to stay.
What to visit
Start your day in Kritou Terra, a village that was the region's main hub until the mid-20th century. It was one of the first villages in Cyprus with home electricity from a private generator, a cinema, a casino, and many cafés. Today, it seeks to regain its former glory.
Visit the Casino, built in 1880, and admire its mural paintings inspired by the Greek revolution. The Church of Panagia was built by Hadjiyiorgakis Kornesios, a prominent figure during Ottoman rule, as a vow after escaping execution in Constantinople.
Walk to the old washhouse, where women would wash clothes and bathe every Thursday. At the village entrance is the main spring, the largest in Cyprus after the one in occupied Kythrea.
Take a selfie at the famous waterfalls, which attract 50,000 visitors yearly. A must-visit is also the Church of Saint Catherine of Sinai, built with milk clay in the 13th century, a UNESCO protected site. Its architecture has inspired modern iconic buildings, including Anassa Hotel.
Also, visit the Church of Saint Paraskevi near Akourdalia, built in the 12th century by the Franks. It lies beside the third river that flows year-round through Kritou Terra. If you're feeling adventurous, hike along the stream through untouched nature to the Miller’s House, where the village’s last operational mill once stood.
Where to eat
In Kritou Terra, dine at "To Mylari". Young chef Christos Polykarpou, after studying in the UK and a successful island-wide career, moved to the village. He serves classic tavern dishes as well as gourmet ones like truffle ravioli, ossobuco, steak, and don't miss the halloumi in pastry with honey. Sundays feature traditional souvla.
On the road to Kathikas is "Fytos", a local favorite for delicious souvlaki. For foodies, try the slow-cooked beef or goat (“Vrasto”) with vegetables. Nearby is the more upscale "The Farmyard", known for Asian cuisine, a large wine list, and award-winning dumplings.
In Kathikas, four taverns await: "To Petradaki", "To Steki tou Panai", "Yiannis", and "Kyparissos"—all with great food and fair prices. At the famous Gin Bar in the village square, choose from over 300 types of gin, enjoy pizza and ice cream.
In Ineia, go to "Archontiko tis Elenis" for good souvlaki. For vegetarians only, Linos (reservation required). For homemade meatballs, stuffed zucchini flowers, and moussaka, head to "Trimitha tis Simou" in Simou’s square.
For seafood, the top choice is "Periyiali" in Latchi, where you can enjoy Cypriot lobster pasta, wines, and cocktails. At the Latchi harbor, "Restomare" offers a lifestyle vibe with sushi and risotto.
For sunset dining, go to "Fly Again" in Argaka, on the beach, with an Irish pub-style menu and great pork chops. Next door, at the “Santa Barbara” beach bar, you'll find Greek-style oven-cooked meals.
For wine
In Kathikas, there are two wineries worth visiting:

"Vasilikon": One of the largest and most modern in Cyprus, with many labels and a stunning view. Food now also available on the terrace (reservation required).

"Sterna": A small, family-run boutique winery in a picturesque spot. Great hospitality, organized wine tastings, and surprising wines.
Twenty minutes from Kritou Terra in Letymbou is "Makarounas Winery", known for engaging tastings and award-winning wines. Nearby in Lemona is "Tsiakkaridis Winery", with a lovely wine tasting terrace and space for events.
For a longer trip, head to Vouni Panagias (30 km from Kritou Terra), home to one of the first private wineries that helped revive Cypriot wine internationally. There’s also a restaurant (by reservation) with breathtaking views at 1000m altitude toward the Akamas peninsula.
